Been rolling around in my head for awhile. If i could get a charger thats been in a minor rear end collision, pick it off of copart for a reasonable amount of money, and build a nice cheapy v8 muscle truck with modern amenities, would be awesome. Slap a makeshift tail light on it in the meantime and my sister has a junk car to learn to drive in. Low risk, able to scrap/sell the engine. Possibly a chance to get one for 6-800$ if nobody else bites (although they do usually go for $ 1200+ other than time, and space, it would make a ton of sense and bee a good learning experience.
Please talk me out of this.

Very bad

One word of caution is to understand the fee structure for copart and how soon you need to get it out of there. Also know that they tend to use forklifts to move vehicles around, so you may have additional damage due to that as well. Otherwise, go for it. Sounds like fun.

Ok, I’m having a hard time seeing why this is supposedly a bad idea. If you don’t give up halfway through at least. What are those taillights off?
I think the paint job would be the most expensive part of this really. It kind of depends on how much that $3,000 buys you. The finished product wouldn’t be worth what you spent on it but it wouldn’t be as bad as most kit cars.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:22 |

Finish fixing the bird first. I did not know smyth made this kit.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:22 |

Oh yeah that 73,000 wreck is not going for $800. If you could snag it for not much more than that then this would be a great project. Just make sure you can handle having to part it out halfway through if it goes awry.

Looks like it would be fun once done, but there’s waaaaaaay less than 3 grand worth of damage on that Charger, so it certainly won’t be cost effective.
If you’re going to do it anyway, then it’s not a bad place to start.
P.S. I hate that generation of Charger (sorry!), but the Ute makes it way better.

Please talk me out of this.
Hahahahahaha.... no.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:24 |

I checked their site - Grand Caravan tail lights.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:26 |

Me like, but check the wreck in person first and be aware of how much it'll cost to get home.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:30 |

It’s a bad idea. It will always be a branded title, home built “truck.”
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:32 |
|
I like it, but you’d still be sitting in a Dodge product with a less than stellar interior.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:33 |

best idea ever!!!
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:36 |

Those tailights are off a Dodge Magnum wagon.
Nope, sorry, Caravan..my bad!
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:37 |
|
I’d start with a Dodge Magnum and a Sawzall first... That’s a cheap way to get into “Redneck Maloo Dodge Style El Ranchero” for under $1000...
If you like it then you can go get the kit and waste a Charger.

“How bad of an idea is this” and “talk me out of this” are not necessarily concurrent.
“How bad?” - yes. It is yes bad.
“Talk me out of it” - no. I will not.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:40 |

Step 1: Buy a Widebody Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye.
Step 2: Apply said Ute Conversion
Step 3: SR20
Step 4: There is no profit in this, but I want to see the pics/videos.

Just to clarify: if it’s a bad idea using someone else’s money and will be amusing to me, I’m going to encourage you to do it. Don’t expect me to talk you out of a great story.

Pretty sure that’s a Golf, dude.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:53 |

Good point. Hold out for a cheap version with a clean title. There are a couple running V6 examples on my local marketplace under 3000.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 11:57 |

I’m thinking body work and paint costs will blow the budget to pieces.
Otherwise you’ll end up with this:
![]() 07/14/2020 at 12:06 |
|
08-10 Grand Caravan Taillights from the look of them.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 12:10 |
|
Wait, maybe they aren’t upside down. I thought the white part was on the bottom but I was mistaken.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 12:19 |
|
That is spectacularly awful.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 12:25 |
|
Looks like they skipped the $3000 body kit and instead spent $80 at Home Depot, and $40 at Bob’s Plaster of Paris Emporium.
(also $4 for electrical tape crosses)
P.S. Al most forgot the $8 Harbor Freight tailgate net, which didn’t last as long as the plaster.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 12:45 |

It’s an utterly horrible idea and you should do it.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:00 |

It’s a terrible idea.
Do it!!!

For some reason I always think that era GC’s tails are the other way around as well?
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:19 |
|
I wish it fit the newer chargers, that would make my life much easier...
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:20 |

I think I would do one of those really nice rattle can jobs (due to zero fucks given) or plasti-dip.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:21 |
|
Thats kind of my dilemma
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:22 |
|
Definetly not for resale value. It has to be cheap enough to mitigate risk, hence buying a salvage car.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:23 |
|
The kit is very nice and seems relatively easy to install, paint would be a super well-prepped rattle can job or plastidip
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:24 |
|
I would feel bad since I actually like the magnum.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:25 |
|
Yeah idk why thats the thumbnail
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:26 |

The problem with the bird is that it needs a ton all at once, as I need to do the body before the interior. I won't be able to justify that right now.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:26 |
|
It might be cheaper to LS swap a Colorado
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:27 |
|
Yeah, that makes sense.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:29 |
|
Yeah, I’m actually totally with you. I always thought it sucked that the Magnum only got the shyte interior— when in the 300 you could get much nicer materials.
Had they built a 300C “Magnum Edition” wagon with the upgraded interior? Woulda rocked.
Instead, it didn’t sell well and ... gone.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:53 |
|
Gonna uhaul it myself most likely
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:55 |
|
Its not so much about getting a charger, its more about getting something unique for cheap. I like the complete package. I wouldn't build any of their other kits, nor would I get a plain charger.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 13:58 |
|
Yeah I doubt the price but these seem to get lost in the shuffle sometimes. I may think about going higher but given that I don’t need this in my life I may hold out for a steal
![]() 07/14/2020 at 14:04 |
|
God forbid you have a practical car with interesting styling
![]() 07/14/2020 at 14:08 |
|
I dont see how, given the cost of the shell, engine, mounts and harness
![]() 07/14/2020 at 14:37 |
|
It just doesn't make sense to put the reverse light so high up. IDK why but they always look like they're upside down.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 14:38 |
|
If you don't plastidip, you should call it a wrap.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 15:49 |

Agreed.

If you don’t have a truck, check my Ram 2500 mini review.
When I went to get the Volvo from Aremme’s place, it ended up costing me almost $300. That was $121 for the Ram 2500 ($90 truck rental, $11 tax, and $20 towing surcharge), $70 for the trailer ($55 plus taxes), I had to buy a hitch because I’m dumb and didn’t bring mine ($25), and gas ($53).
If you have access to a truck and just need the trailer, you’re golden. But be careful, UHaul has some strict requirements for their car haulers. Also, make sure you can get the car on/off the UHaul trailer. If you have to rent a truck, price your options out. If you’re close to the Copart, UHaul pickups are cheap but they have a mileage surcharge. My trip was around 330 miles and that was going to cost me $180 from UHaul, so the Enterpris e Commercial with unlimited miles was cheaper at that point.

I dig it. I’ve always thought that rear-damaged cars were great candidates for this. Hell, i f a tree ever fell on the rear of my Mustang, I’d be tempted to ute-ify it. Too bad Sm yth doesn’t offer a kit for it.
![]() 07/14/2020 at 21:21 |

Probably due to the wheelbase. They seem pretty comitted to making these useful as trucks. One of the videos mentions that they were thinking of doing a slanted window but decided against it, given my intended use I would have loved to see it.
